Re-energising with a Clean, Fresh approach

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is pleased to report a good saving on costs has been achieved and we are well into payback of the initial capital project investment. Overall, we were very impressed with Aurora - and believe that ultimately we have achieved the vast majority of goals we had initially set out to achieve.

THE PROJECT

LOCATION:
Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

CLIENT:
Luton & Dunstable Hospital, Luton (NHS)

A snapshot

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (LDUH), the first NHS Foundation trust in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, sought a more cost-effective, energy-efficient LED lighting installation as well as one that creates a welcoming ambience throughout the hospital.

As part of a £6m refurbishment throughout the existing hospital complex, the objective of this project was to create a more cost-effective, energy-efficient installation and one that creates a more welcoming ambience with a crisp and fresh feel throughout.

Aurora’s strategy involved the upgrade of existing fittings, which were primarily tungsten halogen and fluorescent in type, with LED technology.

Leslie Barras, Mechanical & Electrical Capital Projects Manager, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, says that creating a safe, clean and friendly environment was a core objective; “It is extremely important that patients feel as at ease and as comfortable as they can and this is especially important in places such as the consultancy rooms.”

BEFORE
The Project

Regular meetings ensured a thorough understanding of the client’s challenges and needs. Aurora conducted a complete lighting review, which led to a detailed report evaluating the existing system’s effectiveness. A proposal and specification comprising approximately 1500 fittings from the Aurora VersiTileTM and dSeriesTM ranges followed after a comparison between existing lighting energy use and the proposed Aurora solution – bringing 46% savings in energy consumption.

An installation programme which would reduce user occupancy downtime to a minimum was to be supported by regular meetings between Aurora and LDUH’s Mechanical & Electrical Capital Projects Manager.

AFTER
RESULT

Aurora’s strategy led to a saving of 46% in energy costs, improved patient experience and enhanced definition for CCTV monitoring. Outdoor lighting replacements save approximately £15,000 in an 8-year period.

“Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is pleased to report a good saving on costs has been achieved and we are well into payback of the initial capital project investment.”

Leslie Barras, Mechanical & Electrical Capital Projects Manager, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital concludes: “we are now entering into phase 2 & 3 of the works, as we are pleased with the choice of Aurora lighting , providing a complete lighting range as specified & the technical back up provided, along with a good warranty period on products.”
