THE PROJECT

LOCATION:
Johannesburg, South Africa

CLIENT:
Growthpoint Properties

A snapshot

Aurora worked closely with the end client, Growthpoint Properties, and with Eskom in the successful conceptualisation and implementation of one of the largest energy-saving lighting projects in South Africa.

Like many countries, South Africa has an electricity shortage and has been load-sharing since 2008.

Eskom needed to aggressively reduce power requirements to keep lights on, not compromise its maintenance programme and meet its environmental obligations. It chose to work with Growthpoint, one of SA’s largest listed property developers, to secure IDM funding from Eskom.

The importance of understanding the client’s needs, as well as aligning the technology with the appropriate application was of paramount importance, contributing to a remarkable savings of 5.5 Megawatts.

The Project

The scope of this project required multi-disciplines ranging from lighting design, selection of appropriate low-energy product replacement and programme management through to remote project development and execution nationally across 157 multi-tenanted sites, consisting of both commercial and retail applications.

Growthpoint identified a number of sites within their three sectors — industrial, retail and commercial — that could be bonded together to form a single sizable energy-saving project. Aurora conducted specific energy-saving audits within these various sites, and put together a bundle of energy-efficient lighting products that would suit both Growthpoint’s and their tenants’ needs.

Aurora proposed and supplied numerous lighting technologies. Because of the size of this cradle to grave project, Aurora remained in control from design through to supply and execution. Aurora supplied over 100,000 fittings to enhance ambience and comfort within each environment, including LED strip to highlight key features of the structure and interior design.

AFTER
RESULT

Working together with our partners, this project achieved completion in just ten months.

In November 2014, the Aurora Growthpoint project was awarded the Lux Award for International Lighting Project of the Year.

TOTAL SAVINGS:

  • 5,5MW demand savings,
  • 22,500MW hours annual energy savings
  • 12,000 metric tons of carbon savings.

Award Winning Project

At the Lux Awards 2014, Aurora achieved ‘International Lighting Project of the Year’

"Judges were impressed by the sheer scale of this project, which demonstrates the power of low-energy lighting to deliver spectacular savings."
