Performance, aesthetics & 2 year payback(ROI)

MOVI has restored my faith in the potential of LED in retail environments. Scribbler was looking for a low energy lighting solution, but up ‘til now I had been disappointed with under-bright light levels.

A snapshot

Scribbler, an established greeting card retailer trading from 15 London stores with 14 provincial UK branches, operates a rolling programme of refreshing and refurbishing its outlets.

Retail designer Jon Isherwood of Isherwood Design has worked on all of the Scribbler stores and, for him, lighting is a key element to successful retailing.

“Lighting is my number one priority when refurbishing a store,” said Isherwood. “Today’s agenda is about creating the right visual environment and reducing energy costs. Any retail interior can be much enhanced using the correct lighting, but the trading environment can be nowhere near as effective when the lighting is wrong.”

The Project

Aurora’s initial proposal was to replace metal halide spot lighting with MOVI spot LEDs fitted onto existing global tracking at High Holborn London and Manchester.

MOVI LED is Aurora’s flagship range of effective accent lighting for retail environments. These luminaires are 93 percent efficient, so they support sustainability. At Scribbler, fewer than 3000 lumen 31W spot LED luminaires were needed to replace existing 70W metal halides.

Lamp life and energy consumption were critical to luminaire selection because each fitting needs to operate almost 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

AFTER
RESULT

Against existing energy data supplied by individual stores, Aurora’s calculations were able to demonstrate substantial energy savings and that return on investment was achieved within two years based on energy benefits and lamp replacement cycles.

MOVI offers 50,000 hours to L90, so only 10 percent of the original light is lost in a 12-year life.

“MOVI has restored my faith in the potential of LED in retail environments,” Isherwood said.

“Scribbler was looking for a low energy lighting solution, but up till now I had been disappointed with under-bright light levels. The MOVI range delivers lighting design that works aesthetically well without those problems traditionally associated with metal halide lamps – i.e., heat gain and gradual degradation of the light output.”

MOVI spot LEDs have now been installed to Scribbler stores in High Holborn, Liverpool Street and Kensington in London, plus Nottingham, Manchester and Bath.
